Kiss Ugly Nails Goodbye!

I must admit, I’m a biter. I wish it weren’t so, but I’ve been biting my nails for decades. It’s a necessary evil as far as stress relief is concerned. As many times as I’ve tried to quit, a midterm, essay, work deadline, or (gulp!) credit card statement always drove me back to biting.

I’ve tried using artificial nails before with no luck. Recently, I tried the new nails from Kiss, Kiss 100 Full Cover Nail. Not only are these little beauties cheap ($5.49!) and easy to apply, but they’re durable enough to survive being filed, trimmed, and filed again without popping off!

And I even applied a coat of polish!

Plus, I hear Kelly Clarkson is a big fan of these nails and wore them on her latest video shoot for “I Do Not Hook Up!” I figured, if they’re good enough for Miss Independent, why not give ‘em a whirl!

These are definitely a must for a last-minute event or quick, pick-me-up home manicure!

Audrey Tautou for Chanel No. 5

It’s no secret. Audrey Tautou has replaced Nicole Kidman as the new face of Chanel No. 5. (She is also going to be starring in Coco Avant Chanel!) And why not?

Aside from mastering the art of being ambiguously adorable and sexy at the same time, the Amelie star also embodies class and sophistication.

The first images of the full-length commercial are already being released.

I, for one, am absolutely thrilled. The commercial, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, will be released as a teaser at the end of April 2009 on chaneln5.com. However, you can watch the entire commercial beginning officially on May 5th, exactly 88 years from Chanel No. 5’s introduction to beauty counters.

Until then, you can watch the original commercial starring Nicole Kidman:

A Look Back at Celia Hammond and Patti Boyd

In the 1960’s, you could scarcely pick up a magazine without spotting the famous faces of models, Celia Hammond and Patti Boyd. The two blond Brits were as recognizable then as Hayden Panettiere and Blake Lively are today.

Nearly four decades later, the women are still beautiful and still making statements everywhere they go.

***

Celia Hammond was a familiar face in the 60’s fashion world. Working closely with Vogue and noted photographer, Terence Donovan, Hammond’s photos epitomized youthful innocence, while embracing the bad girl within.

Today, Hammond devotes her time to giving a voice to animals by taking a stand against fur and opening the Celia Hammond Animal Trust to decrease the feral animal population.

When Patti Boyd first burst upon the modeling scene in 1962, many photographers were apt to reject her because of her unconventional looks. As her career progressed, however, she became the muse for many artists including her former lovers, the late George Harrison and Eric Clapton.

In 2006, a San Francisco museum opened a photography exhibit in tribute to Boyd entitled, Through the Eyes of a Muse. These days, Boyd has been busy defending herself in British newspapers over her love triangle with Harrison and Clapton.

Stetson Goes “All American” with Tom Brady

I hate to admit it, but I’m not a big fan of football season. Every Sunday afternoon, or Monday evening, my boyfriend is taken captive by two opposing teams. And even though I’m not, by any means, a fan of sports teams from New England, I can settle down on the couch if it means a certain Tom Brady is playing.

So, when I heard Mr. Brady himself collaborated with the men’s fragrance giants, Stetson, I was curious.

(In all honesty, the excitement stemmed from not only Tom Brady, but also from the fact that I’ve always been more fond of men’s fragrances than women’s.)

The new fragrance, All American Stetson is a pleasant blend of black suede, ginger, musk, cedar leaf, and fresh water ferns. You know, the fragrance notes that the “All-American” guy, like Tom Brady, would be fond of. And, the bottles retail at a pretty good price.

Also, in an attempt to get everyone excited about the launch, The Stetson/Brady camp have also teamed up to create an interactive online game that lets you compete against Tom Brady in events like motocross and snowboarding. (You can check out the game at www.allamericanstetson.com).

It’s kind of refreshing to see big name athletes like Tom Brady embracing fragrance. If you’re looking for a gift for a man in your life, a boyfriend, husband, brother, whomever, Stetson All American might be a good route to go.

Taylor Momsen hits NYFW in NARS

Gossip Girl’s Little J may have abandoned her smokey eye, but in real life, Taylor Momsen’s smokey eye is going strong. In fact, she attended the F/W 2009 Marchesa and Anna Sui shows this Fashion Week in NARS cosmetics. NARS Makeup Artist, Sharon Brown, recreated Taylor’s now-signature look for these events.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to making over your face a la Ms. Momsen:

Skin:

· Mix NARS Firming Foundation in Deauville and NARSskin brightening serum to create an even base with a subtle glow ["She certainly doesn't need the firming benefits of the foundation, but I love the texture," explained Sharon]

· Apply NARS Duo Concealer in Custard/Ginger as needed

· Blend NARS Cream Blush in Penny Lane into cheeks

· Highlight cheekbones with a soft blend of NARS Blush Duo in Hungry Heart

Eyes:

· Line the top and bottom lashes with NARS Eyeliner Pencil in Black Moon

· Smudge Black Moon over entire lid ["For Taylor's eye makeup, the darker the better," said Sharon.]

· Apply slate blue side of NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Underworld for a pop of color

· Layer NARS Single Eyeshadow in Night Flight, using cobalt blue pearls to accentuate Underworld

· Top with a light dusting of NARS Single Eyeshadow in Cyprus

· Highlight brow bone with NARS Single Eyeshadow in Aybssinia

Lips

· Line lips with NARS Lip Liner Pencil in Tonga (Summer 2009)

· Apply NARS Lip Gloss in Sweet Revenge for sheer color (Spring 2009)

All NARS Cosmetics are available at www.narscosmetics.com

2009 Academy Award Winning Hair: Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman

To achieve any Oscar look, it’s all about 4 main signature stages: drying, sectioning, curling and styling.  David Babaii shares how he achieved Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman’s hair for this star studded night.

Angelina Jolie

To achieve this romantic cascade of curls, I sprayed her entire head with David Babaii for WildAid Bohemian Beach Spray and scrunched it into the hair.  This gives just the right texture and hold. Next, I dried her hair by dividing her tresses into 3 sections: top, sides and back leaving the nape area free. Taking small sections starting at the nape, use the David Babaii for WildAid Blow Dryer with the nozzle attachment and finish the drying process with a large round brush to smooth hair straight. At the crown area, I sprayed David Babaii for WildAid Volcanic Ash Root Amplifier to the root area and down the hair shaft. Then, I dried this section with a jumbo round brush to add lift and volume.  Once dry, I sectioned the hair again using the same sectioning process as I did for blow drying. Using the David Babaii for WildAid Styling Iron, I once again sectioned the hair into 3 sections: top, sides and back leaving the nape area free. To curl, use the Styling Iron to create “ribbon curls” by taking small “V” shaped sections. To achieve, wrap the hair around and inside the styling iron close to the scalp area and pull the iron down (similar to curling ribbon). After curling the entire head, I smoothed some of the curls with a brush while leaving some intact. At the crown area, I back-brushed the hair at the scalp area only, sprayed some additional Volcanic Ash Root Amplifier and gently smoothed the surface not to remove too much of the back-brushing. Next, to create her half-up, half down look, I brushed the sides up and back and secured with pins. To complete the back, I ran my fingers up several curls to create volume and variations in texture. For a long but natural lasting hold, I used David Babaii for WildAid Mise en Plis Light Styling Spray.

Styling Tip: Why so much sectioning? It is vital to have constant control of your hair at all times. You will never miss an area or a section.

Nicole Kidman

This Oscar Look is all about glamorizing the bob.  After thoroughly towel drying, I applied David Babaii for WildAid Amplifying Whipped Mousse for volume and hold. I dried the hair by dividing it into 3 sections: top, sides and back leaving the nape area free. Creating small sections, start at the nape and use the David Babaii for WildAid Blow Dryer with the nozzle attachment. Dry each section with a medium round brush to smooth and create a soft round bend to the ends. Once again, section the hair into 3 sections: top with a side part, sides and back leaving the nape area free. To create waves, form “V” shaped pieces and use the David Babaii for WildAid Styling Iron. Run the styling iron down the hair shaft from close to the roots to the ends to create a sleek, smooth look. Repeat, now half way down the hair shaft utilize the beveled edge by turning the styling iron (like a curling iron) to create a soft curl. Clip each curl and spray with David Babaii for WildAid Mise en Plis Light Styling Spray. Alternate the direction of each row of curls in order to achieve a finger wave effect.  When finished, gently brush and form into soft waves using my David Babaii for WildAid Mise en Plis Light Styling Spray for a soft long lasting hold. To finish, I brushed back one side and secured with a decorative hair pin.

Styling Tip: Use “V”  shaped sections helps to eliminate the appearance of partings.
