Ruben Toledo Does Austen, Brontë, and Hawthorne

Are you ready to really witness reLYME geeking out? OK, then. You asked for it:

I love art, I love fashion. So, when both come together in an exquisite way, well, let’s just say this girl is well pleased. A friend of mine introduced me to the art of Isabel and Ruben Toledo a few years back. My life was forever changed. And though I have yet to acquire authentic Toledo artwork of my own, I am still very much a fan.

Now, a former Literature major, there is NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING that makes my heart jump quite like the sight of classic literature novel. Quite honestly. Ask my boyfriend, who has accompanied me to many a squealing trips to Strand.

So, when art, fashion, and literature meet, my friends, I’m absolutely kvelling! Toledo’s latest project, combining his lovely illustrations with the covers of classic novels, is coming to bookstores on August 25.

The works of Jane Austen (Pride and Prejudice), Emily Brontë (Wuthering Heights), and Nathaniel Hawthore (The Scarlet Letter) are being redesigned, and will retail for $16. And you know I’ll own all three!

Michelle Obama Paints the White House Yellow

Not since Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis took Washington by storm with her fashion-forward clothing has a political public figure garnered so much attention for her (or his, as the case may be) style.

And, if you read the paper, watch gossip television, or read fashion sites at all, you know a certain First Lady has been making headlines for quite some time for her fashion choices. Today was no exception.

As First Lady Michelle Obama paid homage to honorees at the 10th anniversary of the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Awards, attendees including design, Calvin Klein designer Francisco Costa looked on in amazement.

Decked in a sunshine yellow Michael Kors skirtsuit and lizard-skin pumps, Mrs. Obama looked absolutely stunning as she spoke about her fascination with the advancements of design.

Whatever you do: DON’T SHOP! (But, really, please shop!)

When the darling, Yuli Ziv of MyItThings and Inside The Tents fame asked me to participate in a video project for Style Coalition last month, I was more than flattered. I would get to spend an evening with many of my friends and fellow fashion bloggers to film a video in support of the fashion industry.

Unfortunately, I was unable to participate as I was stuck on a layover flight at the time. However, I’m oh-so-pleased to share the Don’t Shop video (inspired by the Don’t Vote campaign) with you now. A perfect example of reverse psychology at its finest!:

Many of these darling beauties have become very near and dear to me during my short-lived life in New York City:

Style Observer
Second City Style
My It Things
Fashion Pulse Daily
Running with Heels
Style Bakery
The Jet Set Girls
Gala Darling
StyleIT
Felicia Sullivan
The Daily Obsession
SheFinds
Eye4Style

So, please join me in spreading the word about this video and please don’t shop! (Again, I really want you to!)

Get This Makeup Look Fast: Duffy

Welsh singer/songwriter Duffy is known for more than just her airy vocals and mod style. She’s also know for her classical beauty. And even though the songstress knows how to make her makeup look dramatic with bold black liner and mascara, Duffy keeps her makeup very simple, so as to achieve the perfect amount of pretty.

To get a look like Duffy’s with only four products (after applying a base), it’s all about the neutrals:

Style Icon: Nancy Drew

There’s no better way to cool down in the July heat than by sitting in the shade with a good mystery novel. And though I prefer something a little more grown up, (i.e.- Raymond Chandler’s The Lady in the Lake), sometimes it’s fun to reminisce a bit with a classic Nancy Drew novel.

As I’ve read and reread her mysteries in my lifetime, I’m always struck by the artwork on the covers, and more importantly, Nancy’s impeccable taste in fashion.

The consummate professional, Nancy was often seen on the covers of her novels in tailored skirts, form-fitting dresses, and cherry-red shoes.

After all, how effective can a young, teenage detective be if she doesn’t look her very best?

Nine West’s Vintage America and Vintage America Voices Contest

Last week, Nine West introduced their latest collection, Vintage America, which is an all-American array of shoes and accessories inspired by the Heartland. Sold separately from the mainstream Nine West line, Vintage America features pieces with a casual, worn-in feel, from plaid shirts and cropped sweaters to distressed jeans and cowboy boots.

The winner will be given the chance to record and release a single through Hickory Records, a division of Sony/ATV Music Publishing.

Lloyd Boston for JNY Style Miles

I’ve always respected Lloyd Boston as an expert in fashion, so when he speaks about what compliments a woman’s figure, I pay attention.

Recently, Lloyd Boston and Jones New York have collaborated in a wonderful video project called Style Miles. The premise behind the online video series is to help women get the most out of what is in their closet, and incorporating a few key Jones New York pieces. (This is especially helpful for those of us twenty-somethings attempting to make our closets look less college and more career!)

Check out the latest episode in which Lloyd helps a woman with a fuller figure work with what is in her closet to ensure that she looks fashionable and her curves are flattered:

T-Mobile Sidekick LX Party at the Sidekick Social Club

On Tuesday, I was lucky enough to be invited to a fabulous party for the new T-Mobile Sidekick LX at the Sidekick Social Club. (Just FYI – The new Sidekick looks amazing! It even has built in social networking!)

Aside from the great atmosphere and delicious spread, one of the highlights was chatting it up with some of my favorite fashion bloggers: Wendy of Nitro:licious, Dina of Eye4Style, Sarah of StyleIT, Jordana of Clutch 22, Caroline of The Daily Obsession, and Julia of Fashion Pulse Daily.

Check out this video that Wendy posted on Nitro:licious, featuring yours truly, among many others! -
